RALEIGH, N.C. – Zeb Stewart logged a pair of wins on Sunday
at a quad match, hosted by North Carolina State, but the Keydets fell in their
two dual matches, dropping a 39-6 decision against Indiana University and
falling 36-12 to the host.
Additionally,
Gardner-Webb University was at the quad match, which was contested at Cardinal
Gibbons High School in Raleigh, but VMI did not wrestle Gardner-Webb, as the
two Southern Conference foes met earlier this season in Lexington.
Stewart logged his first
win of the afternoon against the Hoosiers, posting a narrow 2-1 decision over
Matt Ortega at 141 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Ortega opted to
start the second period down and earned an escape for the period's only point.
Likewise, Stewart began the third period on bottom and also earned an escape.
Stewart logged enough time to pick up a riding time point and earned the
victory.
Following Stewart's win,
teammate David Yost posted the only other Keydet victory, besting Indiana's
Ryan Nieman 4-3. With the match knotted at 3-3 at the end of the second, Yost
began the period on bottom and broke free to earn a point and secure the
victory.
In the second bout with
NC State, Stewart picked up an easy six points after the Wolfpack forfeited 141
pounds.
In the heavyweight
division against NC State, sophomore Andrew Embree posted his third
first-period pin of the season. The win by fall was the fastest by Embree this
season as he put Josh Davis on his back in just 52 seconds.
Despite the lopsided score versus Indiana,
several of the matches were close, with four being decided by two points or
less.
VMI (5-10, 2-3 SoCon) is idle until Feb. 20 when
the Keydets return to The Thunderdome one last time in 2012 as Chattanooga comes
to Lexington for a Southern Conference dual. Action is set to begin at 7:30
p.m. and will serve as the team's senior night.
