The Keydets have won three straight home openers and look to build on that stretch against the Wasps, who will be competing in their first dual of the season. After the matchup against Emory & Henry, VMI will face NWCA Coaches' preseason No. 11 pick Michigan Wolverines, who travel to Michigan State on Saturday before hosting the Keydets. The Wolverines have eight wrestlers ranked nationally at their weight classes, including three ranked in the top 10 according to FloWrestling.
This will be the first-ever meeting between VMI and Emory & Henry, and Michigan.
In VMI's first outing of the season, it was 174-pounder
Beau Lewis who came out on top, scoring first in the 174 FR/SO bracket at the Southeast Open. Lewis went 4-0 with a pair of major decisions before earning a sudden victory in the finals.
Along with Lewis, the Keydets had three freshmen placers at the tournament, with
Malachi Ortiz earning sixth in the 125 FR/SO division and heavyweight
Cole Will claiming sixth in the 285 FR/SO bracket.
Returning faces and probable starters that also picked up a bout victory were 149-pounder
Patrick Jordon, 141-pounder
Dyson Dunham, and 157-pounder
Ray Cmil in their respective bracket in the Open division.
