LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Wrestling completed its rich tradition of Wrestling in Barracks on Thursday night.
With a packed crowd mat-side and all four stoops filled with cadets, the Keydets put on a show for the faithful that ended in a 23-13 victory for the red team.
The evening kicked off at 149 with a dominant technical fall from last year's standout
Patrick Jordon, giving the black team an early 5-0 advantage. Red team quickly rebounded, getting three-straight bout victories, including decisions from
Ray Cmil at 157 and
Logan Chambers at 174, along with a 17-0 technical fall from 165-pounder
Ryan Vigil to take a 9-5 lead.
However, the black squad picked up a huge comeback triumph from 184-pounder
Gideon Gerber, who took a 14-13 decision. Preseason All-SoCon honoree
Toby Schoffstall landed a 17-0 technical fall for the black team to regain the lead, 13-9.
Despite the momentum switch, the red team went on to take the next four matchups, getting decisions from
Cole Will at heavyweight (6-0),
Kyle Gibson at 133 (8-1), and
Eli Cramer at 141 (3-0). The most exciting match of the evening was during 125, when
Malachi Ortiz earned an escape point to go up 2-1 in the second tiebreaker round and give the red team decision points.
