FLAGSTAFF,
Ariz.- Senior Randi Baker accounted for both Boise
State goals as the Broncos claimed a
2-1 win over VMI on Sunday at the Eighth Annual Hilton Garden Inn Mountain
Classic, hosted by Northern Arizona.
After falling behind
in the 17th minute on Baker's first goal, the Keydets (2-5) fought
back to knot the game at one in the 69th minute when freshman Olivia
Moore converted her fifth goal of the season.
The score came after a long kick downfield from sophomore keeper Heidi
Beemer in what is believed to be the first keeper assist in VMI's six-year
program history.
“It was a
disappointing result, but I thought that our players played well,” said VMI
head coach Bryan Williams. “It was the
kind of game that a very strong wind played a large role. They got it in the first half, and it kept us
pinned back for a good portion of the first half. We dealt with them pretty well, and to be
down 1-0 going into the second half with the wind was a good position for us.
“In the second half,
they came out and took it to us, but we were able to keep them at bay. The goal that we scored was off of a punt by
Heidi that, with that wind and the bounce, went 70 yards. Their keeper misread it, and Olivia played it
perfect to go right by her for the goal to tie it up.”
Baker and the Broncos
(5-3-1) took a 2-1 advantage in the 81st minute, as Malia Hendrix
found Baker on a cross, beating Beemer for the game-winner.
“They made a run at us
deep down our right side, and we just didn't defend it well,” said Williams of
the game-winner. “It was a very similar
goal to the first one that they scored on us, except this one was on the right instead
of the left. Their player crossed it to
a player on the back post, and no one was there for us mark her. She drove it home under the crossbar, and
that was it.”
BSU out-shot VMI by an
18-6 margin for the match, while claiming a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Beemer made a season-high eight saves in goal
for VMI, while Jennifer Burns made two saves for BSU.
Playing in only the
second regular season tournament in the program's history, VMI also made their
first-ever trip west of the Mississippi
this weekend. The tournament also
provided the Keydets with a pair of first-time opponents.
“This has been a great
experience, irregardless of the sickness and altitude issues we've been dealing
with,” said Williams. “I hope that we've
learned a lot from this trip. The
competition was very good. It's a little
bit different style of play, which is very helpful for us to see. We were really in both matches for a majority
of the games, we weren't outmatched at any point. We just made a couple of mistakes on Friday
night that killed us, and then the two miscues today that led to their
goals. We used everybody today, which certainly
helped us. The altitude and travel
really had an impact on us, but if we come of this tournament stronger, more
fit and ready to do what I think that we can do, then it will be a success.”
VMI returns to action
on Wednesday afternoon, opening up a five-game homestand at Patchin Field with
a showdown against Liberty. The contest, which will serve as the Big South
opener for each side, will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will be featured on a live
video broadcast on the Big South Edge at www.BigSouthSports.com. Fans can sign up to watch the game for a cost
of $4.95, while season packages are also available.
