Keydets come up short against USC Upstate

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's soccer team fell by a 2-0 score to visiting USC Upstate in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field.
 
With the loss, VMI falls to 0-6-1 on the season while the Spartans improve to 3-3-1.
 
Game Summary
Upstate's Maddy DeCola put the Spartans on the board late in the first half after recovering a ball deep in VMI territory before slotting the ball past VMI keeper Maren Ryberg for what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute (42:44).
 
The Spartans added an insurance goal late in the second stanza when Riley O'Bryan took a cross from Dara Russo and tapped it in to cement the 2-0 road victory.

*Upstate took 14 shot attempts for the day to go with five corner kick attempts
*Spartan goalie Madison Ejgird earned the shutout victory with two saves in a complete match while VMI's Ryberg picked up the loss despite four saves in 84 minutes in the cage
*VMI freshman Isabella Franco led the Keydets with three shots on the day while Barrett Callejo, Taliyah Headman and Rachel Baez each had one
*O'Bryan led Upstate with three shots while five others accounted for two apiece
