FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.- Freshman Amanda Berrios scored her first goal of the
season, but it wasn't enough to hold off Northern Arizona as VMI fell
3-1 on day one of the Eighth Annual Hilton Garden Inn Mountain Classic,
hosted by NAU, on Friday evening.
After NAU (3-5-1) opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a goal from Rebekah Schmidt off a corner kick by Brenna Boies, Berrios and the Keydets (2-4) knotted the match at 1-1 in the 17th tick of the clock, with fellow freshman Olivia Moore picking up the assist.
The score remained tied entering the intermission, with NAU holding a 10-4 advantage in shots. The Keydets could keep the Lumberjacks at bay only so long, however, before NAU's Jenna Samora notched the game-winner in the 62nd minute, before Miya Quinn tacked on an insurance goal in the 70th minute off a cross from Cee Cee Odorfer.
The Lumberjacks outshot the Keydets 23-8 for the contest, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. VMI keeper Angela Redmond, playing only her second game of thes season, made eight saves in the contest. Tori Rocke made three saves in goal for the Lumberjacks.
Action at the Mountain Classic continues on Sunday, with the Keydets taking on Boise State at 10 a.m. local time, 1 p.m. Eastern time. BSU was a 3-0 winner in Friday's first game against Louisiana-Monroe. NAU and ULM wrap up the tournament at 1 p.m. local time on Sunday afternoon.

* Friday's loss marks the first time this season that VMI has allowed more than one goal in a game.
* VMI now stands 1-2 all-time in regular-season tournaments, scoring their only such win over Youngstown State in 2005 at the Penguin Classic.
