LEXINGTON, Va. ? A balanced attack
led VMI past South Carolina State by a 6-0 count on Friday afternoon in
non-conference women's soccer action at Patchin Field.
The
Keydets (2-2) scored each of their six goals in the game's opening 36 minutes,
highlighted by a three-goal, one-assist performance from freshman Olivia Moore
(Powhatan, Va./Powhatan). VMI out-shot the
Lady Bulldogs (0-1-1) 39-7 in the contest, the second straight 6-0 Keydet
victory in the series.
“I
was very pleased with our effort today,” said VMI head coach Bryan
Williams. “It was nice to find our
scoring foot in this game. In the first
two games, the chances were there but we just didn't finish them. Today we had chances for our players to put ball
in the back of the net, and we'll have to build on that for the rest of the
season.”
The
Keydets took a 1-0 advantage on Moore's first goal of the day when she touched
the ball past SCSU keeper Alechia Brothers following a cross from Amanda
Berrios from the right side. Moore
scored another goal in the same manner just six minutes later, this time off of
a cross by Chrissy Beach.
Beach
(Las Vegas, Nev./Rancho) got into the mix by scoring the next two goals, coming
in the 14th and 25th minutes. Moore tacked on her third in the 30th
after collecting a free ball in the box, while converted keeper Kathleen
Underwood (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland) scored her first career goal to cap the
scoring in the 36th minute.
“We're
getting some great play out of our freshmen,” said Williams of his team's six
rookies. “Olivia set the tone with her
goals today, and Amanda Berrios and Sarah Strand did a nice job of setting
those up. Those were quality technical
balls that we're now seeing on a more regular basis, and we just have to
continue taking advantage of those throughout the rest of the season.”
Sophomore
Angela Redmond earned the shutout in her first action this season, making three
saves to collect her second career shutout.
Brothers made 12 saves in the contest for the Lady Bulldogs.
“It
was great for Angela to get out on the field and get the shutout today in her
first time out, though she didn't get as much testing back there as I had hoped,”
said Williams. “The play of our back
line showed a lot of composure and maturity today, they handled everything that
South Carolina State threw at us.”
VMI
had eight corner kicks in the contest to SCSU's one, while the Keydets were
twice whistled for offsides. VMI held
the edge in fouls at 9-5.
The
Keydets return to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting two-time reigning Patriot
League Champions Navy at 1 p.m. at Patchin Field. The game will be broadcast online at www.BigSouthSports.com as a part of
the Big South Edge Game of the Week package.
Fans can watch the game for a one-time fee of $4.95, while season
packages are also available.
