Lacrosse Falls in Providence, 12-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Despite three points from senior attack Kevin Hill, the VMI Keydet Lacrosse team dropped Saturday's contest against the Providence College Friars, 12-5. Five different Keydets scored goals on the sunny Rhode Island afternoon, but it was not enough to overcome the home-standing Friars' seven-goal spurt during the final period.

Providence tallied the only goal of the opening quarter, and led 1-0 after the first fifteen minutes. VMI responded at the 10:09 mark in the second, when Bobby Davis got the Keydets on the board with his third goal of the season. The Friars were able to respond by scoring less than a minute later, and they took a 2-1 lead into the locker room.

The third period was fairly evenly matched, as Providence outshot the Keydets by just one, and both teams successfully cleared better than 75 percent of the time. The Friars' Colin Tigh opened the second-half scoring, beating Sean McCoy at the 14:11 mark to up the Providence advantage to two. VMI's Hill was able to close the gap somewhat, as the current MAAC Offensive Player of the Week scored his eighth goal of the season to make the score 3-2.

VMI tied the game for the final time at the 7:30 mark of the third quarter. Freshman Matt Piazza knotted the contest at three, as the Tully, N.Y. native scored his first collegiate goal off a dish from Hill. However, the tie was short-lived, as the home team retook the lead less than two minutes later. Providence would add another goal late in the period, and the Friars held a 5-3 advantage after three quarters. The game was evenly contested for the first 45 minutes, as VMI had the advantage in ground balls, and Providence had fired just one more shot than the Keydets.

The fourth quarter was controlled by the Friars, as they outscored the Keydets 7-2 during the final frame. After Tim Moran cut the VMI deficit to one early in the period, Providence responded with seven-consecutive goals to take an insurmountable 12-4 lead. Brett Leonard would score with 1:07 left to account for the final margin, 12-5.

VMI was led by Hill, who had one goal and dished out two assists, and Moran, who had a goal and an assist. With the win, Providence moves to 2-5 and 2-0 in conference play, while the Keydets drop to 2-6 and 1-1 in MAAC competition.

The Keydets will return to action Saturday, March 29, as they host the Seahawks of Wagner College. Game time at Foster Stadium is currently scheduled for 1 p.m.
