Women’s Soccer finishes road trip at Winthrop

LEXINGTON, Va. – Opening the season with three straight road games, the VMI women's soccer team is set to travel to South Carolina for its final leg of the trip when the Keydets face the Winthrop Eagles Thursday night.
 
Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Eagle Field in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

The Keydets (0-2) opened the season with games at George Mason and Virginia Tech this past weekend. VMI led GMU by a goal through 70 minutes before the Patriots came back to win by a 4-1 count. The Keydets then played tough against the Hokies on Sunday and trailed by just a goal at halftime before Virginia Tech pulled away for a 6-0 win in Blacksburg.
 
VMI freshman Jaleesa Eichel scored the goal at Mason Thursday night as she took a deep free kick from goalie Maren Ryberg and shouldered the ball into the net for VMI's first lead of the season midway through the first half.
 
About the Eagles (0-2)
Winthrop will be playing its third straight opponent from the Southern Conference Thursday night against the Keydets after opening the season with a 4-2 loss to Western Carolina before falling by a 5-0 count to Chattanooga on Sunday night.
 
Monssi Avila-Gutierrez and Lindsay Sheets scored the two goals against WCU last Thursday in the loss to the Catamounts. They were assisted by Sophia Balliet and Lila Bowers as the foursome leads the team in points after two matches.
 
Mia Ruffalo has played all 180 minutes and owns a 4.50 goals-against average to go with seven saves (.438) having faced 32 opponent shot attempts.
