VMI Lacrosse to host HEADstrong tournament October 26

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI lacrosse program announced today it will host its third annual fall HEADstrong tournament on Saturday, October 26, at Drill Field #2 on North Post.
 
VMI will welcome Newberry College and neighbor Washington & Lee to compete in a three-way tournament.
 
Game Schedule - Saturday, October 26
11 a.m. – VMI vs. Washington & Lee
1 p.m. - Newberry vs. Washington & Lee
3 p.m. - VMI vs. Newberry
 
The event will have much more meaning than lacrosse as it raises funds to providing financial, residential and emotional support to families affected by cancer. Over the last two years, the event has raised over $30,000 dollars.
 
The HEADstrong Foundation is an organization that offers financial, residential, and emotional support to families affected by cancer. Its founder, Nicholas, recognized the scarcity of essential resources for families during their fight. Their team is based in Philadelphia and works relentlessly to provide resources for patients and their families who are receiving specialized cancer care throughout the country.
 
HEADstrong was founded in 2007 by Nick Colleluori, who played lacrosse at Hofstra University. Nick was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a blood cancer affecting the lymphatic system during his freshmen season in 2005. Nick passed away in 2006.
 
To this day, HEADstrong has raised more than 24 million dollars and assisted nearly 23,000 families.
 
HEADstrong has sponsored lacrosse tournaments and games nationally for over 10 years.
 
"This event is about much more than lacrosse," said VMI Head Coach James Purpura. "Everyone knows someone that has been impacted by cancer so by using lacrosse as an avenue to raise money and provide support to families in need is just awesome. HEADstrong has a history specifically with the sport of lacrosse and their cause is incredible. We enjoy being a part of this event each year.
 
"We get to welcome two college programs to post where we all get to scrimmage one another and work together to prepare our teams for the upcoming season. It is also nice for people in the valley to be able to check out the sport of lacrosse as it continues to grow by bringing three collegiate programs together."
