Keydets clinch NEC Tournament bid with win over Titans

VMI reaches the postseason for the first time since 2022 SoCon Tournament

DETROIT – Behind a motivated effort to clinch its first postseason bid in four years, the VMI lacrosse team showed relentless effort to earn a dominant 14-5 win over Detroit Mercy Saturday afternoon at Titan Field in Detroit, Michigan.

With the win, the Keydets (7-6, 4-3) clinched the No. 4 seed at next week's Northeast Conference Tournament and will face No. 1 seed and tourney host Robert Morris next Thursday at 5 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The victory marked VMI's third straight win to finish the regular season on a high note and with heavy momentum going into next week's conference tournament.

Game Summary
The Keydets jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first period and did not surrender a goal until the 12:24 mark of the second period. Will Gormsen scored first for VMI before freshman Ethan Ostrowski put in two consecutive goals and Jack Duncan-Bloom added another for the 4-0 advantage after 15 minutes of play.

VMI did not relent after giving up a goal and put up another four scores before the half as Gormsen scored followed by consecutive goals by Beau Durkin. Warner Lewis chipped in with VMI's final goal of the half with 2:07 on the clock before the break to give the Keydets a commanding 8-1 lead at halftime.

Following a Detroit goal to open the second half, the Keydets scored three unanswered goals as Bagwell netted his first goal of the game before Ostrowski and Durkin tallied the others.
