VMI sweeps NEC weekly honors

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – After a dominant win over Detroit Mercy Saturday to clinch a spot in the Northeast Conference Tournament, three VMI cadet-athletes swept this week's NEC weekly honors announced by the league Monday.
 
Freshman Ethan Ostrowski was named both the Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week while senior goalie Adam Norris was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week. In addition, sophomore attack/midfielder Beau Durkin was listed as a Prime Performer for his contributions in the big win. Ostrowski and Norris were given default Prime Performer honors by way of their specialty awards.
 
Ostrowski scored five goals in VMI's dominant 14-5 win over Detroit Mercy to help VMI earn the No. 4 spot at this week's league tournament, the Keydets' first postseason appearance in four years. He was efficient in his shot selection by scoring the five goals on just nine shot attempts to score on 55 percent of his shots. He also picked up two groundballs for the day's work.
 
Norris logged 14 saves throughout his 55 minutes in the cage to thwart the Titans' scoring opportunities for much of the afternoon.  He allowed only three goals before he was replaced with five minutes left in regulation. He also picked up four groundballs in his defensive efforts.
 
Beau Durkin also had a hat trick in the game as the Titan defense struggled to keep up with his shifty speed and crafty maneuvering toward the net.  The Castle Rock, Colorado, native also had one assist for four combined points in the win. He scored on half of his six shot attempts for the day and registered what came to be the game-winning goal in the second period.
 
VMI enters the NEC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 1 seed and tourney  host Robert Morris Thursday night at 5 p.m. in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
