Keydets grab big win on Senior Day

LEXINGTON, Va. – With NEC Tournament implications on the line, the VMI lacrosse team earned an important 13-6 league victory over Wagner College on a hot Saturday afternoon to send the 2026 senior class out with a win on Senior Day at Drill Field 2.

With the win, the Keydets improve to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in NEC play while the Seahawks fall to 5-7 overall and match the Keydets at 3-3 in the league. VMI stays in the fight for a playoff spot at the NEC tourney as only the top four teams in the league qualify. The Keydets will further increase their chances of making the tournament with a victory next Saturday at Detroit Mercy to conclude the regular season.

Game Summary
The game got off to a fast start as just two minutes into the contest the game features three scores with VMI putting in two to the Seahawks' one. Jack Duncan-Bloom scored just 30 seconds in before Wagner matched it at the 13:24 mark with a Jake Mitchell goal. The Keydets got one right back eight seconds later when Jack Rogers won the faceoff and took it in himself to sneak one past the Wagner goalie for a 2-1 VMI lead just 1:44 into the game.

Warner Lewis would add another VMI goal a few minutes later before Wagner's Terry Farrell scored late in the opening period to give VMI a 3-2 advantage going into the second period.

Both defenses clamped down and scoring slowed dramatically in the second period as the lone goal of the stanza came at the 8:28 mark when Duncan-Bloom notched his second goal to give VMI a 4-2 lead at the break.

The Keydets outscored the Seahawks by a 3-2 margin in the third quarter to give VMI a 7-4 advantage with one period to play.

VMI continued to apply pressure in the final period to outscore Wagner by a 6-2 count in the final 15 minutes for the game's final 13-6 tally. Duncan-Bloom and Bagwell each scored a goal to finish the game with both recording a hat trick for the day.

VMI Head Coach Taylor Mendoza
"It was great to be able to send our seniors off on a win for their final game ever on Drill Field #2. So many players have stepped up and it truly was a team-wide effort in today's win. However, our specialist ruled the day and tilted the field."
