VMI in Fifth After Day One of SoCon Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – After excellent performances by several Keydets, the VMI track and field teams find themselves in fifth place in the SoCon standings after Day One of the 2023 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by VMI at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
Nick Brown had an impressive showing in the 400 meter preliminaries by taking first overall in 49.26 seconds to head into Sunday's final with confidence.
 
Keyandre Midgett placed second in both the 60 meter hurdles preliminaries (8.13s) and the long jump (7.29m/23'11"). McBride place third in the 60m hurdles prelims in 8.31 seconds and Xander Topos came in sixth overall in the prelims in 8.43 seconds. All three will compete in Sunday's final round of the event.
 
Topos and Richard Edwards competed well in the 400 meter prelims alongside Brown as all three will compete in Sunday's final round. Topos finished in 49.47 seconds and Edwards placed fifth in 49.65 seconds.
 
D. Alex Fiorillo placed eighth in the mile run prelims in 4:17.46, and Trent Whittaker came in sixth in the 800 meter preliminaries in 1:55.48. Both will compete in Sunday's final rounds for their respective events.
 
Stephen Munson placed fourth in the open pole vault as he earned a height of 4.50 meters, or 14'9."  Senior Kevin Linko ranks in fifth place in the heptathlon with 2,446 points with three more events scheduled on Sunday to complete the multi.
