Sprinters Compete Strong at South Carolina Meet

COLUMBIA, S.C. – While most of the VMI track and field teams were competing at the JMU Invite, six VMI men's sprinters competed well Saturday at the Gamecock Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina.

Freshman Jeremiah Wilks earned a lifetime-best time of 10.83 seconds in the 100 meter for fifth place in the event.

Senior Johnnie Walker led the way in the 400 meter with a 10th-place mark of 49.88 seconds and Jonathan Gray finished 17th overall in 50.51 seconds. Richard Edwards also competed and came in 20th overall in 50.63 seconds.

In the 100 meter invitational race, senior Jordin Poindexter finished in 11th place in 10.73 seconds. He also competed in the 200 meter and finished 16th overall in 21.47 seconds to lead the team in that event. Wilks came in 19th overall in 21.53 seconds while Gray came in 68th overall in 22.77 seconds.

Xander Topos competed in the 400-meter hurdles and placed 16th overall in 57.14 seconds.

The 4x400 relay team composed of Wilks, Gray, Walker and Poindexter came in fourth place overall in 3:13.84, currently the top time in the SoCon for the event.

VMI returns to action next weekend at the Virginia Challenge hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

"We took six sprinters to line up at South Carolina and freshmen Jeremiah Wilks produced two lifetime best times in the 100m at 10.83 and 200m at 21.53.

Our men's 4 x 400m finished our trip to Colombia, SC with a season best time and currently Southern Conference lead of 3:13.84."
