Multiple Keydets Advance to Finals of IC4A/ECAC Championships

Day 2 Results

BOSTON – The VMI men's track and field team represented the Institute well Saturday as multiple Keydets earned their marks to qualify for Sunday's final rounds of the 2022 IC4A/ECAC Championships in Boston.
 
Senior sprinter Jordin Poindexter qualified for the finals in both the 60 meter and 200 meter with his performances Saturday. In the 60m prelims, he came in sixth in 6.83 seconds and followed with another sixth-place finish in the semis in 6.82 seconds. The final round will be contested Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m.
 
Poindexter also showed well in the 200 meter dash, arriving in fourth in 21:40 in the preliminaries. He will compete in Sunday's final Sunday at 12:45 p.m. Freshman Jeremiah Wilks also competed, running a time of 21.99 seconds for 25th place.
 
In the 800 meter, junior Trent Whittaker came in fourth place overall in 1:50.27 and will compete in Sunday's final at 12:20 p.m.
 
Senior Gavin Jenkins ran a new indoor school record time of 14:25.82 for 13th place in the 5000 meter run.
 
The 4x400 meter relay team of Richard Edwards, Rafael Mas, Poindexter and Johnnie Walker qualified for Sunday's final round by placing ninth overall in 3:18.00. The distance medley relay team of Andre Jordan, Rafael Mas, Adam Waite, and Zach Lauster also qualified for Sunday's final by arriving in seventh overall in 10:01.59.
 
The 4x800 relay team consisting of D. Alex Fiorillo, Cade Compton, Stephen Kelley and Brian Tavenner finished 12th overall in 8:02.22.
 
In the men's 400m, Walker placed 14th overall in 48.59 seconds and Edwards followed in 24th overall in 49.69 seconds.
 
Keyandre Midgett placed 23rd in the 60m hurdles in 10.53 seconds and freshman Xander Topos finished 21st overall in 8.70 seconds. 
 
Midgett will also compete in the triple jump Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

"The highlights for VMI at the IC4A/ECAC Championship started Saturday with Jordin Poindexter making the finals Sunday in the 60m dash and 200m.  Then Trent Whittaker stepped on the track finishing with a new indoor PR in the 800m to punch his ticket for Sunday followed be Gavin Jenkins rewriting the VMI 5k record book. Jenkins won his heat, earning a slot for Sunday's final.  Not stopping there, the distance medley relay team of Andre Jordan, Rafael Mas, Adam Waite and anchored by Zach Lauster also earned an opportunity to compete on Day 3. The 4x400m also made it, which consists of Richard Edwards, Rafael Mas, Poindexter and anchored by Walker.
 
"I am very proud of what our men's and women's team were able to accomplish today. Everyone who stepped on the track or runway representing the "I" focused on what they could control and did their best to take advantage of this opportunity. We demonstrated once more during the Indoor season that VMI can compete."
