Track and Field shows well at Big South-SoCon Challenge

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The VMI track and field teams played their part in representing the Southern Conference at the 2026 Big South-SoCon Challenge hosted by UNC Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina.

Cameron Thomas broke his own school record in the pole vault with a first-place height of 5.11 meters (16' 9.25"), topping his previous best of 16' 8.75" set in 2025.

Freshman Deonte Harris came in second in the triple jump with a distance of 14.55 meters.
He also competed well in the 110m hurdles by placing third in 14.97 seconds.

Zachary Denton performed well in the long jump with a third-place mark of 7.00 meters.

*Rye Jackson arrived in fourth in the 400m in 49.15 seconds
*Halim Hardnett placed fourth in the high jump at 1.81m
*Colin Crenshaw came in fourth in the steeple in 6:58.91
*Elisha Williams finished seventh in the shot put at 13.84m just ahead of Tazewell Rae's ninth-place mark of 13.65m
*Isaiah Blount came in eighth in the discus at 41.37m, Rae in ninth at 41.03 (PR) and Williams finished 10th at 37.71m (PR)
*Hardnett also competed in the 100m dash and placed ninth in 10.89 seconds
