VMI Completes Keydet Invitational with Top Marks

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking for a strong finish to the 2022 Keydet Invitational, the VMI track and field teams accomplished the task with several first-place finishes and personal bests Saturday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
Sophomore Keyandre Midgett placed first in the 60-meter hurdles final with a first-place finish in 8.29 seconds while teammates Xander Topos (4th, 8.69s) and Isaiah Blount (5th, 9.36s) also had strong performances.
 
Jordin Poindexter matched his personal best in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.79 seconds while freshman Jeremiah Wilks came in fourth in 7.09 seconds.  Wilks finished his day placing first overall in the 200 meter with a time of 22.21 seconds.
 
Zach Lauster earned a 1:56.84 to earn first place in the 800-meter just ahead of Gavin Jenkins' second-place mark of 1:57.18. Andre Jordan also competed and came in fourth in 1:58.13.
 
"We have five weeks left to teach our team they are capable to compete as champions," said VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Zack Scott. "This weekend, we had some great performances from Rats to first classmen that included personal best performances in almost every event group from field events, sprints and distance. I am pleased with the progression as we grow as a team and develop trust in the new process.
 
"I am excited to see the results from our indoor season when we line up or step up when our name is called to compete at the SoCon Championships."
 
Noah Schagelin came away with a second-place finish in the 500 meter with a time of 1:09.31.
 
The 4x400 relay team consisting of Xander Topos, Richard Edwards, Johnnie Walker and Rafael Mas placed second overall in 3:25.73.
 
Freshman Charles Male earned a second-place mark of 6.56 meters in the long jump with Midgett close behind in third at 6.50 meters.
 
In the pole vault, Stephen Munson logged a second-place height of 3.90 meters just above Kevin Linko's fourth-place mark of 3.75 meters. Eric Thompson also showed well with a height of 3.60 meters for fifth place.
 
Solomon Ghosh registered a fourth-place distance of 13.73 meters in the shot put ahead of Isaiah Blount's fifth-place mark of 12.34 meters. Herbert Brooks (6th, 12.33m), Hunter Davis (7th, 12.30m) and Andrew Granger (8th, 12.24m) also competed well.
 
In the 3,000-meter run, D. Alex Fiorillo came away with a seventh-place time of 8:58.12 for a strong performance.
 
The Keydets return to action next weekend hosting the VMI Winter Relays slated for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29, at the CPTF.
