Keydets Strong on Day One of Keydet Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI track and field teams are off to a great start at the 2022 Keydet Invitational after earning several personal bests and finals qualifying marks Friday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
Sophomore Keyandre Midgett placed first in the 60m hurdles preliminaries  with a time of 8.32 seconds to advance to Saturday's final round at 10:35 a.m. Freshman Xander Topos (third) and Stephen Munson (sixth) earned respective times of 8.67 seconds and 9.51 seconds to also qualify for the final Saturday morning.
 
Midgett also placed first in the triple jump at 14.08 meters while Charles Male came in third at 13.06 meters.

"We continue to move forward and get a little better each day at practice," said VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Zack Scott. "This weekend, Day 1 we saw the results with personal bests. Stephanie Jones had a three-foot improvement. Jordin Poindexter had a second straight meet with a PR and Johnnie Walker in the 60m preliminary race. Keyandre Midget, Xander Topos and Stephen Munson had new PRs in the 60m Hurdles preliminary race."
 
In the 60-meter dash prelims, senior Jordin Poindexter arrived in first with a new personal best time of 6.79 seconds, beating his former best of 6.80 seconds by a hundredth of a second. Freshman Jeremiah Wilks came in fifth in 7.18 seconds and senior Johnnie Walker placed seventh in 7.26 seconds.  All three advance to Saturday's final round at 10:50 a.m.
 
D. Alex Fiorillo earned a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:35.66 while Andre Jordan came in third in 2:36.74. Senior Ian Irizarry-Negron arrived in fourth in 2:42.01.
 
In the distance medley relay, the VMI A team of Zach Lauster, Xander Topos, Cade Compton and Gavin Jenkins placed first in 10:16.82 ahead of the B squad, which consisted of Adam Waite, Noah Schagelin, Dennison Kelly and Timothy Krone taking seventh in 11:00.96. The C squad of Craig Swain, Stephen Kelley, Zach Diller and Brian Tavenner placed eighth overall in 11:16.71.
 
Freshman Richard Edwards came in third in the 400 meter in 50.83 seconds ahead of Noah Schagelin's sixth-place mark of 52.68 seconds.
 
Herbert Brooks arrived in third in the weight throw with a distance of 15.07 meters and teammate Andrew Granger finished fifth at 14.22 meters.
 
The Keydets return to action Saturday morning for Day 2 of the Keydet Invitational.
