LEXINGTON, Va. -- Three first half goals proved to be the difference as the Virginia Military Institute men's soccer team fell 4-0 against East Tennessee State University Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field. The contest was VMI's first home game since Oct. 7 after an unscheduled four-game road swing the last two weeks.
Four different Buccaneers scored in the Southern Conference tilt as Anthony Wojas had a goal and one assist. Joao Ramalho, Robin L'Excellent and William Nordenstrom all scored goals while Donte Brangman, Nick Muth and Cameron Woodfin all had assists.
VMI's offensive efforts were led by Travis Borkey, who took two shots and put one of those efforts on goal. Alex Hartman and Andrew Starnes took a pair of attempts each, with one chance on frame. VMI's leading scorer, Hunter Morgan, also took a pair of shots, including a chance late in the game that went just over the crossbar.
ETSU (7-6-1, 3-3-1 SoCon) out-shot VMI 22-11, with four different Buccaneers taking three shots each. Five players from the ETSU side put multiple shots on goal, while the Keydets (1-13-1, 0-7-0 SoCon) got seven saves from junior Alex Guerra on the afternoon.
VMI earned three corner kicks, with two coming in the first half. All three were sailed in by Alex Hartman. ETSU took eight corners, with five coming in the second half.
The Buccaneers committed 11 fouls in their first trip to Patchin Field since 2008 while VMI was called nine times. Two cards were issued as ETSU's Muth was hit in the 62nd minute and VMI's Andrew Hicks was booked in the 86th minute.
ETSU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as Ramalho, who is ranked 11th in Division I in goals per game, struck in the 16th minute on a Muth pass up the middle. The Buccaneers extended their lead in the 22nd minute as L'Excellent scored unassisted on a slow shot that trickled over the goal line. Nordenstrom had the final goal of the first half as he slide in the box to push a Wojas pass over the line. Brangman sent in the initial pass to Wojas for the set up in the 24th minute.
The Buccaneers, who won the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, took 11 shots while the Keydets managed a pair in the opening half, with two off the foot of Starnes. Four other Keydets took attempts, with three chances on goal. Adelman made three saves in the first stanza while Guerra made four in the Keydet cage.
Fouls in the first half were nearly even as ETSU was whistled five times while the Keydets were called four times. The Buccaneers had three corner kicks to VMI's pair.
The Buccaneers tacked on an insurance goal in the 73rd minute as Wojas took a long cross from Woodfin up the middle the middle the field to put ETSU up 4-0 and take both contests from the Keydets this season.
VMI returns to the road this Saturday as the Keydets head to Macon, Ga. for a SoCon game at Mercer University. Game time has been changed for the tilt at Bear Field from 7 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
