Keydets topple Blue Hose with corner kicks

LEXINGTON, Va. – Effective corner kicks turned out to be the difference in the game as host VMI defeated visiting Presbyterian College by a 3-1 score Monday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The teams battled to a scoreless opening half despite the Keydets (2-1) outshooting Presbyterian (0-2) by a 7-3 count over the first 45 minutes.

The Blue Hose struck first in in the 51st minute (50:19) when Mo Alahmad took a cross from Aiden Burke and snuck it past VMI keeper Santiago Rocha for the first goal of the match.

Just one minute later, the Keydets rushed down the pitch and earned a corner kick opportunity. Sam Dowdy crossed the corner deep into PC territory where Jack Miller headed it in to knot the score at 1-1 in the 52nd minute (51:48).

Moments later, the Keydets earned another corner kick opportunity when Dowdy again put the ball into the right gap where Miguel Osorto knocked it in for what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 57:35 mark.

Stuarts Draft native Jaime Loya put in an insurance goal late in the game (85:16) for VMI when he took a forward pass from Lennox Moua and soared it past PC goalie Saed Anabtawi to clinch the victory for the Keydets.
