Keydets defeat Regent in home opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – A slow start to the game spurred a strong finish as the VMI men's soccer team earned a 6-0 victory over visiting Regent University Saturday afternoon in the 2026 home opener at Patchin Field.

The Keydets (1-1-0) and Royals (0-0) battled to a 0-0 draw at halftime before VMI caught fire in the second half to earn six unanswered goals over the final 45 minutes.

VMI scored quickly in the second half as Yeirin Mejia tapped a cross from Ian Joya above the head of Regent goalie Sebastian Carmenates for the first goal of the season for the Keydets in the 47th minute (46:10). Just seconds later, VMI senior Jesse Lee raced down the field and scored an unassisted goal for a 2-0 VMI lead at the 46:13 mark.

Just three minutes passed before VMI's Jaden Moore took the ball just outside of the goalbox and shot it into the Regent net for a 3-0 lead with over 30 minutes on the clock.

Moore would strike again seven minutes later (49:47) off a cross from Lennox Moua for VMI's fourth goal of the match.

The Keydets would go on to score two more goals over the final 20 minutes, including a brace by Mejia in the 70th minute (69:08) and the sixth goal by Gabriel N'Dakpri assisted by Harrison Efford for the game's final tally.
