Men’s Soccer opens season with loss to Elon

ELON, N.C. – The VMI men's soccer team battled hard but fell by a 3-0 score to host Elon University to open the 2026 season Thursday night in Elon, North Carolina.
 
The Phoenix (1-0) jumped on the Keydets (0-1) with an early push at the VMI net when Martin Kozak found the back of the net in the 19th minute (18:16) with an assist from Jahmir Flowers.
 
VMI held Elon scoreless the remainder of the first half, but 18 minutes in the second period the Phoenix struck again when Dominik Renz slotted the ball past VMI keeper Santiago Rocha for an insurance goal in the 64th minute (63:42).
 
Elon would go on to add one more tally late in the match when Flowers put in the final goal of the game in the 83rd minute (82:29) following an assist from Henry Mertsch.
 
Phoenix goalie Drew Hartman picked up the win with two saves on the night while Rocha took the loss despite six saves throughout the match.

*Elon took 26 shot attempts on the night  led by Kozak and Flowers, who both took five shots during the game. Diego Thompson was close behind with four shots
*VMI forward Jaden Moore led the Keydets with four shots on the night while Yeirin Mejia, Miguel Osorto and Rowen Choi each had one
 
Up Next
