SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A goal in the 41st minute by Virginia Military Institute junior Hunter Morgan snapped a long scoreless drought for the men's soccer team, but the host Terriers of Wofford College scored six goals in the second half to take a 7-1 Southern Conference win.
Morgan's marker at Snyder Field was VMI's first since Travis Borkey potted a goal against Howard University in the 77th minute on Sept. 20 in Lexington, a span of 504 minutes. The junior's second goal of the season came after senior captain Blake McCauley ripped a shot, but was stopped by Terrier keeper Garrett Closs. But Morgan was there for the rebound and pushed home the equalizer.
Wofford (7-4-0, 3-1-0 SoCon) got a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute as Matt Frongello scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Nestor Jaramillo, who later scored what proved to be the game winner in the 55th minute. Carlos Dominguez-Gonzalez scored back-to-back goals just two minutes apart, while Ryan Hurst, Will Puckett and Robin Hupin all scored goals. Jaramillo finished with three assists while Connor Davis, Pierce Verchick, Connor Copeland and Ralph Polson all had helpers.
The Keydets (1-10-1, 0-4-0 SoCon) got another double-digit effort from junior goalkeeper Alex Guerra, who finished with a season-best 12 saves, after logging a 10-save effort Tuesday night at East Tennessee State University. Guerra made six saves in each half of the league game.
Wofford, which advanced to the Southern Conference championship game last season, split time between Closs, who played for 81 minutes and made one save, and Joe Wichmann, who finished the game and was not forced to make a save.
The Terriers out-shot VMI 29-5, with Puckett and Matthew Aurednik taking five each. Morgan and Alex Hartman were the top shooters for VMI, taking two each. Andrew Hicks, who was booked with a yellow card, took one shot as well.
Wofford took 11 corner kicks, including seven in the first half. All three of VMI's corner chances came in the second half. The Keydets were whistled for 13 fouls while Wofford was called eight times.
VMI returns to Patchin Field on Tuesday afternoon for a SoCon game with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. in Lexington.
