BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Hilliary Gupton had five points, including three assists and the game's final goal, as the Campbell Camels defeated the VMI Keydets, 4-0, in Big South women's soccer action Saturday night in Buies Creek, N.C.
Gupton was credited with at least one point on each of CU's (7-10, 3-7 Big South) goals on the evening, including wrapping up the scoring with her first goal of the year in the 48th minute.
VMI (3-14, 1-9 Big South) was credited with nine saves on the night, seven by Liz Nickerson in the second half, but CU held a 22-4 edge in total shots and a crucial 9-0 advantage in corners en route to the win.
After Emily Marbury made a save in the 7th minute, Campbell got on the board in the 14th off a Gupton corner. Caitlin Schneider banged home a header on the play to put the home team ahead, 1-0.
That margin grew to two in the 19th minute, when off a free kick, a loose ball hit several players in the box. It settled to the feet of Alexis Prada, who put it past Marbury for a 2-0 CU lead. Gupton was credited with the assist on the play.
The Camels tacked on a third score in the 33rd minute, when Rachel Miller headed home a Gupton corner to make it a 3-0 contest. The Keydets put a try on goal in the 38th minute when Meredith Baldasare tested CU keeper Samantha Lawson, but Lawson made the save and it remained 3-0 at halftime.
The home team wrapped up the scoring in the 48th minute, when moments after a Gupton corner, she got the ball back 25 yards out and put home the shot from distance, making it a 4-0 contest. Nickerson made seven saves the rest of the way to keep it 4-0, but the Keydets could not muster another try on goal to potentially avert the shutout.
VMI women's soccer closes out the 2013 season on Tuesday, playing host to Radford at 3 p.m.
