Women’s Soccer names 2026 team captains

LEXINGTON, Va. – With the 2025 season completed, the VMI women's soccer program is already preparing for its 2026 campaign by announcing the team captains for next season.

Emily Ward will serve as the primary team captain while Gianna De Cicco and Cameron Jones will be alternate captains. All three will be seniors going into the 2026 season.

"When I received the news, I felt truly honored and blessed," Ward said. "I'm grateful to be part of this family and a team built on mutual trust. We're entering a new season with high hopes and a renewed sense of purpose welcoming everyone's values and contributions to the program."

A native of Yorktown Heights, New York, Ward played in 11 games this past season while earning one start against USC Upstate. A model student and cadet-athlete, she played in 283 minutes on the pitch during the 2025 season.

De Cicco played in 19 games during the season and earned 14 starts on the year to total nearly 1200 minutes on the field during the season. The Lenexa, Kansas, native had an assist in the game at Samford and took eight shots for the year, including two against Mercer.

"I feel very grateful and honored to be trusted by my teammates to be put in this position," said De Cicco. "It is definitely a privilege. I'm really looking forward to next season and being with the team."

Defender Cameron Jones started all 20 games in 2025 and logged three shot attempts, two of which required a save from the opposing goalie.  The Ridgefield, Washington, native played in over 1700 minutes on the pitch this past season.

"I feel honored and blessed that my team has entrusted me with the responsibility of being one their captains," Jones said. "I can't wait to see what we can accomplish - Rah Virginia Mil!"

VMI Head Coach Jim Robbins
"We are excited to have seniors Emily Ward, Cameron Jones, and Gianna De Cicco serve as team captains for the 2026 season. All three players were chosen by their teammates to serve in this capacity for the upcoming spring and fall seasons.  I am confident they will do an excellent job in leading our program and will use their complementary leadership styles to establish standards, both on the Hill and the field, that will help VMI Women's Soccer continue to be more competitive in the SoCon and move our program closer to reaching our stated goals."
