LEXINGTON, Va. – The Virginia
Military Institute men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Presbyterian College in its
season finale Saturday afternoon. Prior to the Big South Conference game, the
team honored its six seniors, playing for the final time at Patchin Field.
Before
the game, Richie Rose, who concluded his third season as the head man, and his
assistant coach, Tony Conway '01, presented the six seniors, Kyle Farmer, Taylor
Feuerstein the afternoon's starting keeper, co-captains David Rochow and Kip
Zechman, Matt Seinfeld and Zaher Shihata, with photos alongside each players'
parents.
Presbyterian
College (4-15-0, 3-7-0 BSC) utilized a goal in each half to stave off the
Keydets, who sliced the Blue Hose lead in half with just over 12 minutes on the
board. PC got both its goals from Igancio Monchetti, once in the 24th
minute and the second in the 60th. His first marker came unassisted,
while Jonny Mercado tallied the helper on the second.
Fittingly,
VMI's tally came from the foot of one of the seniors honored as Farmer scored
his third goal of the year unassisted in the 78th minute. Farmer
controlled a defender's back pass before edging to his right and beating PC
keeper Tyler Beadle.
As a
team, VMI (2-13-1, 1-7-1 BSC) outshot the Blue Hose 20-14, the first time the
Keydets have out-shot an opponent since Sept. 21 at the University of Richmond,
a span of 10 games. Rochow led VMI in shooting, taking four attempts, a
majority of which were headers. He put two of the attempts on goal. Rochow and
Farmer were the only VMI players with multiple shots on goal; however, Seinfeld
and Blake McCauley each took three total attempts.
In goal,
Feuerstein stopped seven of PC's nine shots on goal, while Beadle, proved why
he is the nation's No. 1 ranked goalie in saves per game, stopping seven attempts.
Beadle averages just under seven stops per game.
The
Keydets held the edge on the corners as well, taking 11 attempts, including
seven in the second half, while Presbyterian College was allowed just six. The
Blue Hose were whistled for 10 fouls, with nine coming the back half, as VMI
was called seven times. The Keydets committed just two fouls in the second half
of the game.
