Dunne's School Record Highlights Women's S&D Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – Justina Dunne set a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke, highlighting action at the season opener for the VMI women's swimming and diving team, held Friday evening at Clark King Pool on VMI Post. The Keydets dropped both ends of the relay tri-meet, losing 208-62 to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs and falling 136-74 to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. Each swimming event contested on the evening was a relay.

Dunne's school record, the only one set by VMI at the meet, came on the opening leg of the 3X100-yard backstroke and officially was 1:01.63. It was the third race of the evening, and the first of Dunne's VMI career, as she did not compete during the 2011-12 season, her first year on Post. Dunne opened with a 29.57 first 50 meters, before closing in 32.06 to best Mackenzie Perkins' mark from last season.

VMI would go on to finish second in that race, finishing in 3:16.10 behind strong legs from Perkins and freshman Caitlyn Jackson.

Heather Magill was also in action Friday, competing as the lone diver in both the 1 and 3-meter disciplines. Magill posted a 204.70 score in the 1-meter, and her 242.30 mark in the 3-meter was the third-best score of her career at that height.

VMI women's swimming and diving will return to action Saturday, as the Keydets take part in a quad meet hosted by Virginia Tech. Liberty and Gardner-Webb will join the Hokies and Keydets, and action will get underway at 11 a.m.
