Women's Soccer Falls to Campbell 1-0 to End Season

BUIES CREEK, N.C. –  Ashley Clark scored in the 60th minute for the only goal of the game, helping the Campbell Fighting Camels defeat the VMI Keydets, 1-0, in Big South women's soccer action Thursday in Buies Creek, N.C.

The loss ends the careers of VMI's (3-13-2, 0-9-1 Big South) senior class – Sarah Strand, Gabby McCarron, Christina Gontarski and Amanda Berrios, all of whom saw action in this game. VMI dropped seven games by one goal during the season, including five of its last six.

Berrios made eight saves, but was unable to stop the decisive of Clark's 10 shots, as the CU (12-4-2, 6-1-2) forward took a pass at the top of the box at 59:25, beat the defender 1 vs 1 and scored to the VMI keeper's left. The goal was Clark's 10th of the season.

The first 10:21 of the game saw just three shots, but two were on goal, as Clark tested Berrios in the opening moments, but to no avail. VMI's Simone Jimenez then put a shot on net at 10:21, but Ryann Terrero, the CU netminder, made the save to keep the match scoreless. The contest then settled into a great deal of midfield play, as just three shots, all by Clark, were attempted over the next 24-plus minutes.

With the match still scoreless, the Keydets got back into the offensive flow with a Liz Affronti try in the 37th minute, but again, VMI was stopped by Terrero. CU then counterattacked with their first shot by a player other than Clark, but Marisa Muller pulled a try wide in the 41st minute. The Camels had two additional shots late in the half, but Berrios stopped one in the 43rd minute and an attempt in the waning moments was wide, sending the match to halftime scoreless.

The teams traded shots over the opening four minutes of the second half, with Allie Segura getting the VMI try in the 49th minute. She missed wide, and Clark came back to the other end of the field for a shot attempt on Berrios, but was turned aside again. CU did get a follow-up shot, but it sailed high and it remained 0-0.

The next shot of the match would prove to be decisive, however, as Clark finally found the net for the go-ahead goal and a 1-0 Camel lead. She tried again one minute later, but missed wide, and there would not be another shot attempt for nearly 10 minutes, until the home team was stopped by Berrios in the 71st minute.

Campbell got its final shots on goal in the 81st and 82nd minutes, both of which were stopped by Berrios, and VMI responded by increasing its offensive intensity. The Keydets had four of their seven total shot attempts over the next six-plus minutes, and forced Torrero to make a save in the 89th minute to stop a Christelle Ndongo effort. VMI, however, could not find the tying goal, and the Keydets' final shot of the year went wide at 88:30, as Campbell took the match 1-0.

Clark's 10 shots helped CU to a 17-7 edge in shot attempts, while the home team also had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Terrero made three saves for the Camels.

Two of the VMI seniors closed out their careers with notable senior seasons from a statistical viewpoint, as Strand finished tied for fifth in program history in points (19) and fifth in goals scored (9), both single-season marks from the 2011 year. She also finished tied for third in career goals (15), while Berrios posted the second-most saves in VMI history this season with her 114 stops.
