COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – VMI held Air Force to one goal in the first half, handling a 21-shot barrage, but the Falcons added two goals in the second half to pull away and notch a 3-0 win in women's soccer action Sunday, on the final day of the Falcon Invitational at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
VMI (1-9) goalkeeper Angela Redmond stopped the final eight shots on goal in the first half, but Eryn Avjian's one-timer from seven yards out just 4:17 into the contest had given Air Force (7-4-1) a 1-0 advantage. The Keydet defense would hold until the 73rd minute, when Air Force struck again to go up 2-0, and the hosts would add an 89th minute score to account for the final margin.
Redmond had eight saves for the Keydets, while Heidi Beemer played the second half and stopped four shots. Air Force's Megan Dozier and Bridgett Murphy had a goal and assist apiece, while Avjian and Leah Bratt added points as well. Falcon keeper Sharon Aradine had two saves, turning aside Amanda Berrios and Sarah Strand attempts over the match's final 17 minutes.
VMI women's soccer will return to action Friday, opening Big South play by taking on Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
