DAVIDSON, N.C.- The VMI swimming & diving teams resumed their season on Friday night, as both the men's and women's squads were defeated by Davidson. The women lost 69-36 despite junior Briana Allard's new varsity record in the one-meter diving (169.02), while the men fell 160-54.
The Keydet men were led by sophomore James Goodwillie, who won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.37. VMI also picked up second-place finishes from Matt Dale in the 1000 freestyle (10:47.53) and Will Rowcliffe in the 50 freestyle (22.63). The Keydets also placed third in both relays contested, as Rowcliffe, Justin Ferrell, Matt Elliott and Tristan Euritt swam a 1:31.05 in the 4x50 freestyle, while Goodwillie, Ferrell, Hank Purvis and Chris Dreikorn swam a 1:44.38 in the 4x50 medley.
On the women's side, senior Ateala Tuff took first place in the 500 freestyle with a 6:59.57, while the team's 4x50 freestyle relay also took the top spot, as Glendon Robertson, Pin-Fen Chen, Tuff and Chelsea Nugent swam a 2:00.72. Nugent also placed third in the 50 freestyle with a 27.69, while Chen did the same in the 200 backstroke with her 2:47.42.
The Keydets return to action next Saturday, traveling to Washington, D.C. to take on Howard and St. Peter's, while the women will also face Mount St. Mary's.
