DOVER, Del. - In a game that
featured just 15 total shots, a penalty kick goal provided the difference as
Delaware State defeated VMI, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer action at
Alumni Stadium.
The
Hornets' (1-4) lone goal of the day came in the 72nd minute,
following a VMI foul of DSU forward Candace Wyre in the box. Junior Chelsea Brown then stepped up to take
the penalty kick, converting her first goal of the season to put the hosts on
top, 1-0.
The
Keydets (1-4) were unable to mount a threat the rest of the way, being out-shot
5-0 in the second half.
VMI
jumped out to a fast start in the contest, unleashing a pair of shots in the
game's opening eight minutes. Midway
through the half, back-to-back blasts by Amanda Berrios and Chrissy Beach
sailed wide before VMI again came up empty on consecutive shots by Beach and
Sarah Strand.
"We had some great
chances to score early, but just couldn't convert," said VMI head coach
Bryan Williams. "We had an opportunity to go up a goal in the first 45
seconds of the match, but Olivia Moore pushed the ball just wide.
Chrissy Beach had a couple of opportunities as well, but we just didn't
finish them. This is a disappointing loss, but we'll get back home and
get ready for Navy now on Friday."
Keydet
keeper Angela Redmond, meanwhile, kept the game scoreless thanks to three first-half
saves, while her counterpart, Brittany Curtis, made a pair of stops in the
opening stanza.
Neither
team posted a shot on goal in the second frame, save DSU's penalty kick attempt. The final tally showed the Hornets with a 9-6
advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Each team was whistled offsides four times.
The
Keydets return to action on Friday evening, making the first of two consecutive
trips to Maryland, taking on Navy at 7 p.m.
