LEXINGTON, Va. - Gardner-Webb's Dawn Rollyson notched her second goal of the season in the game's 29th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 win over VMI in Big South Conference play at Patchin Field on Friday afternoon.
The goal came as Stephanie Benshoof sent a restart kick from midfield into the box, where Jane Giesler headed the ball to Rollyson, who touched it into the net. The victory moved the Lady Bulldogs to 9-6 on the season and 3-1 in Big South play, while the Keydets fall to 4-9 on the season and 2-3 in league play.
"I definitely appreciated what Gardner-Webb brought to Patchin today," said VMI head coach Bryan Williams. "They are a very solid, very organized team. I thought that despite possession going their way in the first half that the period was very even. Their goal was very ugly and unfortunate. I felt the back line played well today, they really dealt with a lot of creative attacks and shut them down very effectively."
GWU held a 15-6 advantage in shots in the contest, including 7-2 in the first half. The Keydets managed four shots in the second half, stepping up their attack as the game went on.
"In the second half, the opportunities that we created against them were significantly more dangerous than theirs against us," continued Williams. "I liked the way that we picked up the pace of play and the intensity in the final 20 minutes. I can honestly say that if we had another five minutes that I felt like we would've found a way to score. I was disappointed with the outcome, but pleased with our effort in the second half, especially with Angela Redmond's play in goal. We're looking forward to getting back out on the field against Winthrop on Sunday."
GWU keeper Samantha Rupert made five saves to preserve the shutout. For VMI, meanwhile, Heidi Beemer played the first half, making one save while allowing the game's only goal while Angela Redmond made three saves while playing the final 45 minutes in goal.
The Keydets return to action on Sunday afternoon, continuing their Big South slate by playing host to Winthrop at 1 p.m.
