Women’s Soccer season comes to close in loss at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The VMI women's soccer team battled hard but ultimately fell by a 2-0 score to host UNCG in the opening round of the 2025 Southern Conference Championship at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.
 
With the win, the Spartans advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 seed Western Carolina Friday in Cullowhee, North Carolina. The Keydets finish the 2025 campaign with a 2-17-1 overall record.

"The team showed a lot of character and fight tonight. We played very well and executed our game plan. The two goals were unfortunate, but we have a lot to be proud of. We gave UNCG all they could handle. It was a great game."
 
Scoring Summary
* The Spartans earned the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute (31:27) when Taylor Mentzer crossed the ball deep into the Keydet box which bounced off the crossbar. Teammate Ava Kiss was first on the scene to rebound and kick it in for the first goal of the match
* UNCG was rewarded with a penalty kick opportunity in the 55th minute (54:54) when VMI's Caroline Marini was assessed a foul within the VMI goalbox. Mentzer was given the opportunity to take the penalty kick which she place into the upper left corner of the net
 
Key Stats
*The Spartans took 28 shot attempts at the VMI net
*VMI freshman keeper Maren Ryberg earned a season-high 15 saves on the night as UNCG was credited with 17 shots on frame
*Keydet sophomore Rachel Baez took a shot for VMI midway through the second half from several feet outside the Spartan box, but the shot sailed just high to keep the Keydets off the scoreboard
*Mentzer and Bryanna Parkes led UNCG with four shots apiece while nine others took two shots each at Ryberg
