Lacrosse Falls to Mount St. Mary's, 11-8

EMMITSBURG, Md.- With a chance to clinch their first-ever post-season berth with a win, the VMI Keydets dropped Wednesday afternoon's lacrosse contest to the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's, 11-8.

Due to the loss, the Keydets await the outcome of other games late Wednesday to determine whether their post-season fates will be decided at this point.

With the defeat, VMI falls to 5-8 overall, and 4-3 in the MAAC. The Mount snap a five-game losing streak, and move to 2-10 overall, and 2-5 in conference play.

On the sunny and warm Maryland day, the Mount jumped ahead at the 8:17 mark, when Geery Grant scored his 11th goal of the season. VMI answered with less than a minute left in the period, as Tim Moran fed Lowell Patterson a man-up score. The goal was Patterson's first of the year, and after one period, the score was tied at one.

The Mount tallied two goals in the first 3:03 of the second frame, and jumped ahead 3-1. VMI had the answer once again, as Kevin Hill scored at the 10:53 mark to cut the lead to one. The man-up goal was the 73rd of Hill's career, and put him within one goal of the VMI top-ten career list.

Hill's goal appeared to turn the momentum, as VMI added four additional goals to complete the five-goal run. Matt Harrison, Jacob Weimer, Brett Leonard, and Tim Moran all scored in the final five minutes of the second quarter, and the Keydets took a 6-3 lead into the intermission. Hill assisted on both Harrison and Weimer's goals, two points which gave him 151 for his VMI career. That total moves the senior into fifth on the all-time VMI points scored list.

During the first half, the Mount were called for three penalties, and the Keydets converted those into two man-up goals. The teams were virtually even in all other statistical categories during the first 30 minutes of play.

The third quarter was marked by twelve Mount shots, and four goals by the homestanding squad. VMI also tallied two Tim Moran goals during the third frame, and after the three quarters of play, the Keydets led 8-7. Mount St. Mary's dominated the face-off X during the quarter, winning five-of-seven contested, and the Mount outdueled the Keydets in ground balls, 11-5.

The 8-7 lead held until the 6:16 mark of the final period. After a Jacob Weimer penalty, the Mount's leading goal scorer, Dan Mohr, beat Sean McCoy to tie the game at 8.

From there, the Mount added to their lead. Three goals over the final five minutes pushed the VMI deficit to 11-8, accounting for the final margin.

On the day, both goalies made nine saves, but VMI's McCoy faced 39 shots, to just 27 that VMI attempted. The Mount out-ground balled the Keydets 33-23, and the home team controlled the face-off X, winning 14-of-22 overall.

The Keydets were led by Moran, who had three goals and two assists in the losing cause. Hill had three points, and four other Keydets scored.

Mount St. Mary's was led by Grant and Mohr, who had three goals apiece in the home team's second victory of the season.
The Keydets return to action Saturday, as they travel to Riverdale, N.Y., to take on Manhattan College. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
