Lacrosse Posts 13-6 Win Over Wagner

LEXINGTON, Va.-Sparked by a six-goal day from sophomore Tim Moran, the VMI Keydet Lacrosse team knocked off the Wagner Seahawks Saturday afternoon, 13-6.

With the win, VMI moves to 3-6 overall, and 2-1 in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference. Wagner drops to 0-8 and 0-2 in the MAAC with the defeat.

The Seahawks jumped on top early, as midfielder Mike Hess beat Sean McCoy to give Wagner a 1-0 advantage. Less than a minute later, Moran began his outstanding day, as the Keydet midfielder scored an unassisted goal to tie the contest at 1.

The two teams played a back-and-forth first period, with the Keydets getting a man-up Moran goal and the first of three Matt Harrison markers to take a 3-2 lead after one frame.

Wagner's Hess scored again at 9:08 of the second quarter, and the score was tied once more. But just as he did in the opening quarter, Moran answered Hess' goal with one of his own, beating Wagner goalie Brandon Waszak to give VMI the lead once again. The 4-3 lead was one which VMI would never relinquish, in fact, that was as close as the Seahawks would get the rest of the way.

After Moran's goal, Brett Leonard picked up a groundball off the ensuing faceoff, and the sophomore beat Waszak to give VMI a 5-3 advantage. Moran would tack on his fourth goal of the first half, and after two periods, the Keydets held a 6-3 edge. Despite the three-goal lead, the first half was somewhat evenly matched. VMI was 5-for-6 in clear attempts, while the Seahawks were 6-for-7.

VMI held a slim edge in groundballs, but the efforts of Moran had been the true boost for the Keydets, and VMI would add to its advantage in the third quarter.

After a Wagner goal at 13:10 of the third quarter, Moran notched his fifth goal at 8:36 to push the lead back to three markers, and then the Florence, N.J., native added a sixth tally less than six minutes later. The man-up goal would push the Keydets' lead to 8-4.

Taking a four-goal lead into the final frame, the Keydets sealed the game with a five-goal run in the first seven minutes. Bobby Davis got it going with a man-up goal at the 14:41 mark, and Kevin Hill pushed the lead to 10-4 at 13:36, off a Moran pass.

Matt Harrison then scored at 12:36, and also tallied at 11:18. The senior attack from Great Mills, Md. had his second three-goal game of the season, as he also posted three markers against the current No. 1 in the country, Virginia. Harrison's two goals, both coming off dishes from Hill, gave VMI a 12-4 advantage. Davis scored another goal, bookending the run with his scores, to push the advantage to 13-4.

Wagner's Jeff Policicchio would score twice in the final 3:34 to account for the final 13-6 margin.

On the day, the Seahawks were called for nine penalties, and served a total of ten minutes in the box. VMI took advantage with three man-up goals to help the Keydet cause.

VMI was led by Moran, whose seven points paced the Keydets. Moran's six tallies are the third-highest single game total in VMI Lacrosse history, a VMI season-high, and a personal career-high.

The Keydets were also boosted by Hill, who had a goal and four assists, as well as Harrison's three-goal outing. On the day, Wagner was led by Policicchio, who posted a hat trick in the losing cause.

The Keydets will return to action next Saturday, April 5, when they host MAAC opponent St. Joseph's. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Foster Stadium.
