BOX SCORELEXINGTON, Va. -- The Appalachian State women's soccer team kept their record untarnished on the season with a 3-0 shutout of VMI on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field. The Keydets (3-4-1) kept things close in the opening half, but the Mountaineers (6-0-2) tallied a pair of second half goals to pull away and win their fifth straight overall.
Appalachian State opened the game's scoring in the 15th minute as Renee Korman slipped one past VMI freshman keeper
Angela Redmond for her first of the season. Redmond would face several more shots in the opening half, but kept VMI close by grabbing five saves in her 45 minutes of action.
In the second half, the Mountaineers would continue to put pressure on the VMI defense by firing off 17 shots. They would eventually capitalize on two of those, as Carella DiMaggio (60th minute) and Stephanie Aaron (80th minute) would each record their first goals on the season to propel their team to the win.
VMI's other freshman goalie,
Heidi Beemer, played the final 45 minutes in the net and recorded five saves. Appalachian State netminder Emma White stopped one shot to earn her fourth victory of the year.
On the day, the Mountaineers outshot VMI in the contest by a 26-5 margin and held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. The game also produced 11 fouls, six against Appalachian State and five for the home team.
And after the first home game in their last six contests, VMI will hit the road once again as they travel to Annapolis, Md. to play the Navy Midshipmen (4-2-2) on Tuesday, September 25 at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
HEAD COACH BRYAN WILLIAMS -- "To step out on the field and have this game be 1-0 at the half felt pretty good. We weren't playing as aggressive or technical as I would like to see us play, but at the same time to be frustrating them and playing a very good defensive game also felt very good."
"We made mistakes on all three goals and they capitalized on them. They are a good team and we were beaten by a quality opponent. It was a warm day, we wore down and had people playing with injuries, but that says something about the composure and willingness of our team to persevere through great adversity. I was very pleased with the play of our players, but I know we can do better."
