LEXINGTON, Va. -- The VMI men's soccer team picked up offensively where it left off last Wednesday by scoring in the 7th minute as sophomore forward Tony Nweke scored his third goal in two games to put VMI up 1-0. However, the Howard Bison (0-3-3) netted the equalizer in the 80th minute and VMI (1-2-1) could not find the back of the net despite firing off 10 shots in overtime as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Keydets struck quickly to open the game after Nweke's third goal of the season came after beating Howard keeper Chris Taylor on a one-v-one situation. Nweke was set up by a nice feed from freshman Zach Morgan, who picked up his second assist in as many games.
While both teams fired off ten shots in the first half, the Bison outshot VMI 10-5 in the second and were finally able to draw even in the 80th minute, courtesy of Lamar Hyde's third goal of the season. Hyde beat a couple of defenders and fired a shot past the outstretched hands of VMI freshman keeper Brian Sowell.
In overtime, VMI kept constant pressure on Howard with ten shots in the two extra periods. VMI's best scoring chance came in the first overtime when freshman Chris Curtis crossed a ball in front of the net, but a Nweke header sailed wide right as the game would end in a draw.
Sowell finished with five saves on the day while Howard goalie Chris Taylor also grabbed five. VMI held a slight edge in corner kicks with nine, while the visitors earned eight.
In the game, VMI outshot its opponents for the first time in the past nine games, today by a margin of 25-22, with 17 of them coming off the feet of Keydet freshmen.
VMI will round out a three game home stand on Sunday, September 16 as they host USC-Upstate in a 1 p.m. matchup at Patchin Field. The Bison are next in action on Thursday, September 27 when they host James Madison in Washington, D.C.
