LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee Generals (6-1-2) kept their unbeaten streak in tact with a 3-0 win over VMI on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field for their fourth straight victory. The Keydets surrendered multiple goals for just the first time in nearly a month, and with the loss fall to 4-4-1 on the year.
Washington & Lee picked up their first victory over the Keydets in the rivalry since 2001, and now hold a 17-14-4 overall edge dating back to 1972.
The Generals got on the board quickly in the fifth minute when senior forward Jack Palmer put home a deflected save by VMI keeper
Brian Sowell for the games first score. They would continue the offensive pressure throughout the half by firing off 15 more shots, but Sowell hauled in a few big saves to keep the Keydets close heading into the half.
In the second half, however, W&L was able to convert on its opportunities by adding a pair of goals to pull away for the victory. Pignatelli knocked home another Sowell deflection in the 48th minute while senior midfielder Travis Short finished off a corner kick to round out the scoring in the 73rd minute.
For the game, the Generals held a 27-8 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Sowell finished with six saves in 80 minutes of action for the Keydets while W&L's goalkeeper Ted Sheedy also grabbed six for the victory.
The Keydets will return to conference play this weekend as they host the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Saturday, October 6 at Patchin Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
