RADFORD, Va. -- After battling back from a two-goal second half deficit, the VMI men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss as Radford netted the game-winning goal in the 108th minute of play in double-overtime. After Keydet freshman goalie
Brian Sowell stopped the initial point-blank shot, Radford's Justin Zimmer picked up the rebound and found teammate Davori Husadzinovic for the score on a rainy day at Cupp Stadium.
With the win, Radford improves to 8-6, and 3-2 in Big South play. VMI falls to 5-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference, with both Big South losses coming by just one-goal margins.
Freshman forward
Zach Morgan led the Keydets with two goals in the game, while Radford was led by Husadzinovic who tallied a goal and an assist.
The Highlanders held a 19-13 advantage in shots for the game, forcing Sowell to make seven saves. Radford's Zach Roszel made three stops, and picked up his eighth win of the year.
Radford's Daryn Patricio opened the scoring in the 19th minute when a free kick deflected off a teammate and misdirected into the back of the net. Camden Brown gave the Highlanders a two-goal lead just before the half when he knocked home an initial shot by Husadzinovic that was saved by Sowell and deflected towards Brown.
The Keydets, however, came out in the second half and responded to the deficit, and cut the Radford lead in half when freshman
Zach Morgan converted a penalty kick for the first score of his career. VMI was then able to net the equalizer in the 77th minute when Morgan found the back of the net again, with an assist to fellow freshman
David Hill.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Radford had a good chance to put the game away with a show from inside the box from Will Thomsen, but Sowell was able to knock away the attempt. A few minutes later, Sowell once again came up big with a save on Zimmer's close-range shot, however, the wet ball was controlled by Zimmer and fed to Husadzinovic for the game-winner at the 107:35 mark.
After the tough result, VMI will now return home to face future Big South member Presbyterian on Sunday, October 28 at Patchin Field. Game time will be at 12 p.m., and will be followed by the women's team taking on UNC Asheville at 3 p.m.
