Fraser, Gilman set tone at Virginia Challenge

Gilman again breaks school, personal record in the 800m

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – VMI high jumper Morgan Fraser and sophomore mid-distance specialist Reagan Gilman opened Day 1 of the 2026 Virginia Challenge with excellent marks to set the tone for VMI against elite competition Friday at the University of Virginia's Lannigan Field in Charlottesville.

For the second consecutive week, Gilman broke her own school record in the 800 meter by running a 2:07.67 in 13th place, beating last week's first place time of 2:10.50 at the JMU Invitational. She placed first in her heat to set the mark. Last season, she set the new standard for the first time with a time of 2:12.24 at the 2025 SoCon Outdoor Championships after she beat Kelsey Newcomb's prior school record of 2:14.25 set in 2013.

Fraser performed well in the high jump with a 13th-place height of 1.62 meters, just shy of her 1.63m jump last week at the JMU Invite. She was in a five-way tie for 13th place at 1.62m.

The VMI track and field teams resume competition on Day 2 of the Virginia Challenge Saturday with several athletes slated to compete as outlined below:
