Honig, Smith ‘25 complete Women’s Soccer coaching staff

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Head Women's Soccer Coach Jim Robbins announced Tuesday the completion of his coaching staff for the 2025 season as Samantha Honig was named Volunteer Goalkeeper Coach and Courtney Smith '25 was named Volunteer Assistant Coach.
 
Honig served as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Keydets during the 2024 season and helped VMI to six wins on the year, its most in six years.
 
She brings a wealth of experience including both a Division 1 playing career and premier level coaching. She is originally from northern Virginia where she accumulated over 15 years of playing experience. She has been coaching at the U11-U16 level with Augusta United Soccer Club for over nine years and served as an Assistant Coach at Mary Baldwin University from 2021-24.
 
She played Division I soccer as a goalkeeper at the University of Richmond from 2000-2004, where she graduated with a degree in criminal justice. She later received her master's degree in justice administration from Johnson and Wales University. In addition, she holds USSF "D", "E" and "F" licenses and a United Soccer Coaches Level I Goalkeeper Diploma.
 
Honig has been employed with Blue Ridge Court Services based in Staunton, Virginia, since 2009 as a Pretrial Program Manager. Among many responsibilities, she facilitated the expansion of pretrial programs in the Waynesboro/Lexington/Rockbridge/Buena Vista jurisdictions and works to bridge gaps and develop new working relationships in all jurisdictions. She also conducts interviews with defendants awaiting bail and verifies and evaluates information for preparing bail release.
 
Courtney Smith '25 played in 40 games during her VMI career from 2021-24, including a career-high 17 appearances during her sophomore 2022 season. The Clemson, South Carolina, native earned an assist as a freshman and took a career-high four shot attempts that season. She played nearly 600 minutes on the pitch throughout her time as a Keydet and served as a valuable team member at practices and team functions.
 
During the spring of 2025, Smith served as an Assistant Coach at Rockbridge County High School and as an Assistant Coach for local club team Virginia Atlantic FC. She ran trainings at the high school and did tactics and in-game adjustments for the team. As an assistant for VA Atlantic FC, she performed scouting reports, filming duties, game day operations and fulfilled practice planning and execution. 
 
An excellent student, Smith also earned several academic honors during her cadetship including several appearances on the SoCon All-Academic Team and SoCon Honor Roll. She graduated from the Institute in May with a degree in applied mathematics.
