LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving closed out the 2024-25 season Saturday evening at the America East Championships at Goodall Pool.
Earning the Keydets third medal was
Matthew Picard who swam a 44.48 in the 100 freestyle to secure bronze and a new team record.
Stephen Russell continued to break more records on day four, smashing the 1,000 (9:29.84) and 1,650 (15:49.01) freestyle team and Rat records en route to sixth place.
Jack Mills also found success, finishing fifth in the 200 butterfly in 1:48.73. Also earning a top-five mark was
Ethan Griffith in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:00.95.
Earning a top time in the A-Final was
Sam Castle, placing seventh in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 1:51.02 for a new team record.
Sam Calder was right behind in the B-Final with a 1:51.75 mark. In the women's 100 freestyle,
Mackenzie Byrne drew 17th with a time of 52.85 for a new Rat and team record.
Austin Reeder secured 10th in the 200 breaststroke for the Keydets, swimming in 2:04.28, followed by
Layne Tucker who finished in 2:05.75.
Closing out the day for VMI in the men's 200 butterfly were
Kayleb Eldridge,
Caleb Wolf, and
Brayden Green who went 10th, 12
th, and 16th, respectively. Eldridge swam a 1:51.53 while Wolf earned a 1:52.63 mark and Green nabbed a 1:56.06 mark.
The 400 freestyle relay team with Mills, Picard, Castle, and Calder swam to fourth place with a time of 2:58.21 to shatter the team record. Mills broke the Rat record in the 100 freestyle leading off for the 400 freestyle relay. On the women's side, Byrne,
Walden Wilder,
Ava Phillips, and
Noelle Tong also broke the team record in the 400 freestyle relay.
VMI men finished the championships in fifth with a team score of 378 while the women closed out at seventh with 112 points. Binghamton won the meet for the men while New Hampshire won for the women.
