OCALA, Fla. – VMI Men's Swimming & Diving went down to Florida for the CSCAA National Invitational Championship this week and returned with broken records and rewritten history.
The Keydets placed 22nd in the invite, the highest placement in program history, and scored 148.5 points, the most points in this meet in program history.
Becoming VMI's first-ever finalist in the national meet was freshman
Ian Lutz, who placed 10th in the 50 Fly on Thursday. Lutz's 50 Fly mark broke the team and Rat records, and was the first-ever sub-22-second time in the history of the program. The freshman sensation would also score 16th in the 100 Fly and 18th in the 50 Free.
Jack Mills shattered the 200 Fly team record to earn 15th place, while
Aubrey Struder tallied an 18th-place mark in the 1,650 Free and 20th in the 1,000 Free.
Four relay squads qualified for the invitational. Making noise was the 200 Free Relay team with Mills, Lutz,
Matthew Picard, and
Sam Castle, earning 16th place. The 200 Medley Relay group with Castle, Lutz, Picard, and
Layne Tucker broke the team record and placed 18th.
Rounding out the relays was the 400 Free Relay team consisting of Lutz, Picard, Mills, and
Joshua Wolf took home 10th, while the 800 Free Relay squad with Struder, Wolf,
Caleb Wolf, and
Kayleb Eldridge tallied a 20th-place finish.
