VMI Men’s Swim & Dive scores big with two medals, multiple historic marks

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Men's Swimming & Diving medaled for the third-straight day and set historic marks at the America East Championships Friday evening at Goodall Pool in the VMI Aquatic Center.
 
Kicking off day three was Ian Lutz, who set a new Rat and team record in the 100 Fly prelims (48.06), then later scored bronze and broke his own Rat and team records again (47.71).
 
Also competing in the 100 Fly A-Final was Matthew Picard, finishing in eighth place (48.55). Max Brunner finished 13th in the B-Final (49.52), while Kayleb Eldridge, Caleb Wolf, and Will Loftin went 18th (50.28), 19th (50.66), and 20th (50.75), respectively, in the C-Final.
 
Lane Jones etched his name into the record books forever, becoming the highest placed male diver in the America East era with a fourth-place finish in the one-meter with 263.55.
 
VMI had four competitors in the 200 Free. Jack Mills led the pack with seventh place in the A-Final (1:38.77). Boasting the top time in the B-Final was Joshua Wolf, scoring ninth place for nine points (1:40.06). In the C-Final, John Shoffner went 18th (1:42.86), while Aubrey Struder finished 20th (1:44.58).
 
Posting another top-five finish for the Keydets was Layne Tucker in the 100 Breast, earning fifth in the A-Final (55.06). Austin Reeder finished in 10th place (56.23), and Zach Richardson closed out the B-Final in 16th place (59.83).
 
In the 100 Back, Sam Castle tallied a fifth-place mark in the A-Final (49.22), with Adi Pattada earning 17th in the C-Final (52.42). Brayden Green raced in the 400 IM C-Final and finished in 20th (4:12.07).
 
Capping off the night was the 400 Medley Relay squad with Lutz, Picard, Sam Castle, and Tucker, who brought home the silver medal and set a new team record (3:15.30). The Lutz-Castle-Picard trio earned their third relay medal, with Tucker earning his second.
 
The Keydets enter the final day of the championships in fourth place with 309 points, over 60 points more than last year's three-day point total.
 
Next Up
The final day of the championship meet will begin at 10 a.m. with prelims, then continue with finals at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
