Keydets head south to face Samford

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's soccer team continues Southern Conference action this weekend as the Keydets make the long journey to Birmingham, Alabama, to face league foe Samford Friday evening.
 
Kick-off is set for a 5 p.m. EDT start at Samford's Yelton Track and Soccer Stadium.

The Bulldogs have won all 13 contests dating back to 2014 when VMI rejoined the Southern Conference. Samford won by a 5-0 score last season in Lexington.
 
About the Bulldogs (6-2-5, 3-0-2)
Samford's only losses on the season come to Georgia Southern for the season opener and to SEC instate rival Alabama. The Bulldogs have earned draws with Belmont, UAB, Western Carolina and most recently to SoCon counterpart Furman by a 2-2 count this past Sunday.

Samford boasts wins over league foes Chattanooga, Wofford and The Citadel.
 
Samantha De Luca leads the team with eight goals followed by Clare Nicholas with three.
Sarah Holland, Martha Bishop, Fleming Dean and Brooklyn Miller all have two for the season. Caroline Smith has yet to find the back of the net, but leads the squad with four assists so far.
 
Peyton Hull has started all 13 matches and played all 1170 minutes for the season, accounting for just 11 goals allowed to go with 49 saves and a .817 save percentage.

Kelsie Henton of Mercer earned the game-winning goal midway through the opening half when she took a cross by Regan Moore that landed in the goal box and snuck it past VMI keeper Maren Ryberg in the 30th minute (29:18).
 
The Bears tacked on another goal late in the second half when Peyton Kreul took a cross from Morganne Eikelbarner in the 78th minute (77:12) and shot it past Ryberg for an insurance goal with a little over 12 minutes left in regulation.
