Grimwood hired as VMI Lacrosse assistant coach

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Head Lacrosse Coach Taylor Mendoza announced Friday the hiring of Seth Grimwood to serve as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the VMI Lacrosse program.

Grimwood has spent the past five years at Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina, where he coached one of the best offenses at the NCAA Division II level as the Associate Head Coach. He also served as the offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator during his tenure.

He helped lead the Bulldogs to NCAA Tournament appearance four of the past five seasons, including their first ever NCAA tourney win in 2021 when they advanced to the Final Four. In 2022, the Bulldogs earned their highest USILA national ranking ever at No.2. Wingate won a SAC regular season championship in 2023, and a SAC Tournament title in 2025. This past season, the Bulldogs won 15 games, which is the most in program history for a single season.

"I am so thrilled to have Seth joining our program here at VMI," Mendoza said. "Throughout the interview process, Seth stood out as not only someone who has a great mind for the game, but also as someone whose values greatly align with the VMI Lacrosse program. The work ethic, infectious enthusiasm and positive attitude are going to be great assets for VMI Lacrosse and I couldn't be happier to welcome him to Lexington."

Over the past five years, the Bulldogs have consistently been ranked in the Top 10 in points, goals, assists, goals per game, points per game and assists per game.

In his first year serving as the offensive coordinator in 2021, the Bulldogs averaged 17.0 goals per game – the highest in program history – and this past season Wingate averaged 16.6 goals per game, second most in the program's 28-year history.

During his time at Wingate, he has mentored seven All-Americans, 14 All-America awards, and four National Players of the Year.  Willie Grieco received the national Attackman of the Year award three consecutive years from 2022-24, and Danny Riley was named the National Midfielder of the Year in 2022. Grieco finished his career at Wingate No. 2 all-time in NCAA Division II history with 404 career points. He becomes only the second DII player ever to score over 400 points and the first since 1974. Grieco also ranks No. 2 in DII history in career assists.

At the conference level, Grimwood coached eight All-SAC players to 18 All-Conference awards and three Conference Player of the Year honors, including Willie Grieco in 2022 and 2023 and Kyle Spence in 2025.

In 2019, he was named the offensive coordinator at Westminster University in Salt Lake City, Utah. In Grimwood's system, Westminster's offense improved from 29th to 14th in scoring during the 2020 NCAA Dll season. Westminster racked up 15.13 goals per contest with six different players collecting double-digit points in only eight games.

A collegiate student-athlete himself, Grimwood appeared in 59 contests during his Wingate career, piling up 41 goals and 39 assists. He was a part of Wingate's first-ever South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship team in 2017, while also helping the 'Dogs capture the 2018 SAC Tournament title. An honorable mention All-SAC honoree in 2018, Grimwood led the SAC champion Bulldogs with 18 assists, ranking second on the team with 36 points and fourth with 18 goals.

He graduated from Wingate in 2018 with a degree in community and commercial recreation.
