Keydets face UNCG in SoCon Tournament opening round

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's soccer team will open the 2025 Southern Conference tournament at UNCG in the first round Tuesday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.
 
Kick-off is slated for a 6 p.m. start and will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Keydets (2-16-1, 0-9) fell to UNCG by a 4-0 score back on September 18 when both schools opened Southern Conference play.  VMI will look to even the season series Tuesday night. The winner will advance to play No. 2 seed Western Carolina Friday in Cullowhee, North Carolina, in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
 
VMI is coming off a hard-fought 3-0 loss to ETSU Sunday afternoon in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the regular season finale.
 
About UNCG (3-11-3, 2-4-3)
The Spartans will enter the match hungry for a win having lost three of its four past Southern Conference matchups, including a 2-1 loss to league winner Samford Sunday afternoon in Greensboro.  The game before, the Spartans fell by a 4-2 score to Western Carolina, which ended up with the No. 2 seed in the tourney. The last result for UNCG came by way of a 1-1 tie with The Citadel on October 16.
 
When VMI faced the Spartans on September 18, Taylor Mentzer scored a brace – her only two goals of the season - while Ryen Ortiz and Rina Ogimoto added the other scores in the 4-0 victory. Ogimoto leads the Spartans with five goals on the season while Ortiz has logged three. Mentzer and Ava Kiss both have two goals for the team.
 
Emma Malone has played all but 193 minutes for the season and has allowed 30 goals for a 2.02 goals-against average. She has recorded 59 saves for a .663 save percentage having faced 191 shot attempts for the year.
 
All-Time Series (1-12)
