Keydets Battle Chattanooga in 2-0 Setback

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's soccer team battled Chattanooga through a scoreless opening half before the Mocs scored twice after the break to earn a 2-0 victory Thursday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The Keydets held Chattanooga off the board throughout the opening 45 minutes behind a strong defensive effort and five first-half saves from goalkeeper Maren Ryberg. Ella Peterson provided VMI's first shot on goal in the seventh minute, while Jordan Davis added an attempt just before halftime.

VMI created several opportunities early in the second half, as Nixon Carpenter and Mackenzie Hobik each put shots on frame. Chattanooga finally broke the deadlock in the 60th minute when Paige Thomas scored off an assist from Quinn Johnson. Thomas added her second goal of the afternoon in the 80th minute to account for the final margin.

Ryberg finished with a season-high 11 saves in the VMI goal. Peterson led the Keydets with two shots on goal, while Carpenter and Hobik each added one.

The Keydets return to action Sunday, Oct. 4, traveling to Tennessee Tech for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
