Keydets to face American Sunday at Patchin Field

LEXINGTON, Va. – Coming off a huge season-opening 1-0 win over Davidson Thursday, the VMI women's soccer team returns to the pitch Sunday to face American University at 2 p.m. at Patchin Field.

VMI freshman Emma Rice scored the game-winning goal Thursday with 10 minutes left in regulation to earn VMI's first season-opening win over a Division I opponent since defeating Hampton to begin the 2018 campaign.
 
Senior keeper Whitney Tracy recorded eight saves on the afternoon to preserve VMI's win to earn her first career shutout.
 
Series History
Despite only being 3.5 hours apart, the two schools have faced off only three times before with the Eagles owning two wins to VMI's one.  The Eagles registered a 2-0 victory the last time the teams battled in 2019 one year after the Keydets earned a 1-0 double OT victory at Patchin Field in 2018. The schools' first ever meeting took place on August 24, 2017, a 2-1 American victory in Washington, D.C.
 
About the Eagles
American is coming off a 1-1 tie with D.C. crosstown rival George Washington Thursday afternoon. After the Colonials scored in the 40th minute, the Eagles responded just four minutes later when sophomore Bella Vozar knotted the score at one apiece with an equalizer, her first career goal. Olivia Simmons was credited with the assist.
 
Senior Brooke Steel, junior Alyssa Giroux and sophomore Lailah Stewart all return to this year's squad after leading the team with three goals a piece in 2023.
 
Freshman Addison Roemer made a save in her first collegiate start in the box Thursday against George Washington.
